BACK-CATALOGUE // ‘Made Of Concrete’ (Demo, 2002)

It’s like jumping into the cold water, I mean, revisiting my own music that I had written and recorded when I was 15-16-17 years old! Listening to it I was thinking – shit, the lyrics are so naive and weird, but hey, we were still at school and just wanted to have fun! Why not Russian you ask? Well, with Yadviga, the second founding member of T-Lazarus, whose vocals you would here on this track, we really welcomed to play with different languages. We are both linguists so it was kinda our thing to do – we sang in English, French, German sometimes, a bit of Russian as well by the way! But I can’t seem to find those demos. All in all – ‘Made Of Concrete’ is about boredom and teenage love, I guess pretty much it, meaning-wise, haha I wrote this music definitely being inspired by Placebo, the band that I LOVED as I was a teenager – it was such a queer revolution for me! So I started learning electric guitar from playing Placebo’s songs – actually the early ones are pretty simple and fun to perform. So I guess that guitar sound comes from there.  I played and programmed it all myself on my parents’ old computer using Cubase, as far as I remember. It was a technical horror, to be honest. The microphone was some sort of a thing that is a part of headphones for call centres, you know what I mean? You will, when you get to listen to this song, haha   But I like the sunny vibes of it, I must say! I think it was sunny when we worked on it 🙂 This track was the first one on our debut demo-album ‘Under The Green’ that we released in the end of 2002. On the 9th of March 2003 we played our debut gig in St. Petersburg and so it started for us. But that’s already another story that I will continue telling next week. Much love, Gene...
